Talking About Several Things
This chapter teaches how Swedish nouns become plural when you are not saying "the".
English often adds -s. Swedish has several plural patterns, so the safest habit is:
- learn the noun with gender;
- learn or look up its plural;
- use patterns only as support, not as blind guessing.
Common Plural Patterns

Swedish textbooks traditionally group nouns into five declensions. A declension is simply a family of nouns that forms the plural in a similar way.

This framework helps you read a dictionary table. It does not let you identify every class from spelling: bil, sak, and bok are all en nouns but have bilar, saker, and böcker.
Weak e Can Disappear In The Plural
Some nouns ending in -el, -en, or -er lose an unstressed e when the plural ending is added.
Compare a neuter noun with zero plural:
The ending alone does not tell you which path to choose, so store the plural.
A Small Umlaut Family
An umlaut here means that the stem vowel changes in the plural. These forms are common and worth learning as a recognition family:

The vowel change is not a productive rule for an unfamiliar noun. Learn each full pair.
