En, Ett, and the Definite Noun

This chapter teaches the first noun contrast learners need: a car versus the car, and a house versus the house.

Swedish does not use a separate word for the in the basic noun form. It often attaches the definite marker to the end of the noun.

The gender is not decoration. It chooses many later forms:

Do not guess gender from meaning. Store it with the noun.

For many nouns, the basic singular definite rules are:

The first sentence introduces a car. The second sentence talks about the known car, so bil becomes bilen.

Another example:

äpple is an ett noun ending in a vowel, so the definite form is äpplet.

Some high-frequency nouns do not simply keep the whole stem and add -en or -et. A weak e near the end may disappear, or the noun may take only -n.

These endings are common enough to recognize, but not safe enough to generate blindly. Learn the definite form with the noun.

The ending in huset or bordet is part of the spoken word, not a silent written article. Listen to the complete definite form in the dictionary because the exact vowel quality and stress reduction vary by word and speech style.
