Chapter 3 · Sounds and Spelling

Stress and the Two Accents

Why does anden have two pronunciations?

Swedish words carry stress, and many two-syllable words also carry one of two pitch melodies. You do not need to produce the melodies perfectly to be understood, but you should know they exist so listening makes sense.

Why do Swedes say anden in two different ways?

Read the two visual cues separately: bold type marks the stressed syllable, while the colored markers show the word's pitch peaks. Accent 2 still has only one stressed syllable.

anden

Accent 1
the duck
The duck swims calmly on the lake.
Accent 2
the spirit / ghost
The spirit appeared in the old house.

Stress: Usually The First Syllable

Native Swedish words normally stress the first syllable:

girl
A girl is reading a book.

Common exceptions are loan patterns, especially the -era verbs from Verb Basics: Infinitive and Present:

study
I want to study Swedish.

Prefixes be- and för- are usually unstressed:

pay
I have to pay the bill.
understand
I am trying to understand the question.

The Two Accents

Stressed words with two or more syllables use one of two pitch patterns:

  • Accent 1 (acute): one main lexical pitch peak.
  • Accent 2 (grave): two lexical pitch peaks. The second peak does not create a second stressed syllable.

A practical anchor: many forms with an added ending keep accent 1 (anden from and, definite of a one-syllable noun), while many words that are two syllables in their base form take accent 2 (flicka, tala, plural flickor).

Two more pairs let you compare the same contrast in context:

tomten

Accent 1
the plot of land
The plot of land is behind the red house.
Accent 2
Santa / the gnome
Santa gives Christmas presents to the children.

stegen

Accent 1
the steps / footsteps
The footsteps echoed in the empty corridor.
Accent 2
the ladder
The ladder is leaning against the wall.

What Learners Should Actually Do

  1. Do not try to derive the accent from spelling; it is not written.
  2. Listen to full word audio in the dictionary, especially for definite and plural forms.
  3. Context resolves nearly every ambiguity; misusing accent rarely blocks communication, it just sounds foreign.
